*Cognitive Computation Special Issue*
*Dealing with Big Data: Lessons from Cognitive Computing*
Introduction:
Big Data is growing almost at an exponential rate, as most of the world's
activities are becoming digital, along with an increase in speed,
complexity, uncertainty and the requirement to realize concurrent
time-limited tasks. Unlike traditional systems, cognitive computing systems
are not based on predetermined answers or actions to perform a set of
tasks; instead, they are trained using natural and biologically-inspired
approaches, including computational intelligence and machine learning
algorithms. Cognitive computing systems interact with, learn naturally from
people and data, and thus help increase the
productivity of what either humans or machines could do on their own.
This special issue aims at promoting inter-disciplinary
research, particularly in the complementary areas of cognitive
psychology, biology, computing science and engineering, for dealing with
Big Data challenges across these domains. A variety of signal and data
types exist in both engineering and biological systems, including
image, audio and other biological sources of information. The analysis
and use of these signals and data require high performance and
intelligent computational techniques, thereby making cognitive computing
science an ideal candidate to glue these disciplines together.
The special issue will be focusing mainly on i) Brain Signal Processing
ii) Bio-inspired systems iii) Big data analytics and
applications, and iv) Bio-inspired visualization
Topics include (but are not limited to):
* Evidential reasoning
* Molecular, biological, and genetic computation
* Recent trends in brain-computer interface
* Computational models for predicting human-mind states
* Biologically inspired visualization techniques and applications
* Big data analytics and applications such as in Medicine, Healthcare and
Social Media
