*Workshop Description *

For the past decade, research and development in the NLP (Natural Language
Processing) community has advanced NLP techniques for educational
applications. For example, the NLP community in north America organizes a
series of workshops on Innovative Use of NLP for Building Educational
Applications (BEA) to improve existing capabilities and to generate
creative ways to use NLP in educational applications for writing, reading,
assessment, and so on. The previous BEA workshops were in conjunction with
promotive conferences in NLP area (either ACL or NAACL HLT).

In addition to research papers in the above workshops, several shared tasks
were also organized, e.g. “Helping Our Own” (HOO) English grammatical error
detection/correction competitions in 2011 and 2012, and Native Language
Identification (NLI) competitions in 2013. Independent of the series of BEA
workshops, the CoNLL-2013 shared task is on grammatical error correction
for learners' English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In addition, there is a
SemEval shared task on student’s response analysis. All of these
competitions will increase the visibility of educational application
research in the NLP community.

The ICCE 2014 in Japan will provide an ideal opportunity to bring together
again influential as well as aspiring researchers in computer education
area, to deliberate and interact on a range of research issues. The purpose
of this workshop is to identify challenging problems facing the development
of computer-assisted techniques for Asian language learning, and to shape
future research directions through the publication of high quality, applied
and theoretical research findings. To better meet this end, we also hold a
competitive shared task on Grammatical Error Diagnosis, this year, for
Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL).

*Shared Task*

China’s growing global influence has prompted a surge of interest in
learning Mandarin *Chinese as a foreign language (CFL)*, and this trend is
expected to continue. However, whereas many computer-assisted learning
tools have been developed for learning English, support for CFL learners is
relatively sparse, especially in terms of tools designed to automatically
evaluate learners’ responses. The goal of this shared task is developing
the computer-assisted tools to detect several kinds of grammatical errors,
i.e., *redundant word, missing word, word disorder, and word selection*.
The input sentence contains one of defined error types. The developed tool
should indicate which kind of error type is embedded in the given sentence.
If the input contains no grammatical errors, the tool should return: *sid,
correct*. The output format should be *sid, error_type* if the input
contains a grammatical error. Examples are shown as follows:

    Input: (sid=B2-1447-6)    希望沒有人再被食物中毒
    output:  B2-1447-6    Redundant
*Example 2*:
    Input: (sid=C1-1876-2)    對社會國家(有)不同的影響
    output:  C1-1876-2    Missing

    Input: (sid=B1-0110-2)    我會穿著一個黃色的襯衫
