The Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) Lab [1] is a research group at
the Department of Computer Science of the Technische Universität (TU)
Darmstadt, Germany. Starting 2015 (flexible entry date), we seek highly
qualified individuals as
PostDoc- or PhD-level Research Staff
(for an initial term of two years)
to strengthen the group in the DFG- and BMBF-funded projects, related to
the following fields:
Natural Language Processing, Large-Scale Robust Semantic Text Analysis,
Lexical Semantics, Digital Humanities
The successful applicant will be assigned to at least one of the following
profiles:
- original research in natural language processing based on the research
questions in philosophy, philology, history sciences, etc.;
- lexical-semantic resources and algorithms based on UBY [2], in
particular novel applications of sense-aligned large-scale lexical-sematic
knowledge bases in NLP, e.g. textual entailment or semantic role labeling;
- NLP for novel educational applications, e.g. automatic assessment of
students¹ answers, intelligent writing assistance, or feedback;
- novel approaches to corpus construction and annotation based on WebAnno
[3] or CSniper [4], in particular annotation tools and frameworks, or
game-based interfaces;
- language technology for Digital Humanities based on the DKPro product
family [5].
The primary goals of the UKP Lab are cutting-edge basic research in
natural language processing in the areas described below, as well as
innovative language technologies and corpus-centered services. Particular
importance and visibility are attached to Digital Humanities, such as
philosophy, history, or educational research, and various kinds of online
media. The Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt is regularly
ranked among the top in Germany. UKP avails itself of its expertise to
build a research center for knowledge processing in the Web. To this end,
UKP has established several strategic partnerships: with the Goethe
University Frankfurt in the Digital Humanities research cluster and the
joint eHumanities Center (to be funded by BMBF), with the Institute for
Computational Linguistics of the University of Heidelberg in the
BMBF-funded CLARIN initiative, and with the Department of Social Sciences
and History of TU Darmstadt in the BMBF-funded DARIAH-DE initiative. UKP
founded and coordinates the Language and Knowledge Engineering (LKE)
program for young researchers and the Knowledge Discovery in Scientific
Publications (KDSL) graduate program. The Lab cooperates closely not only
with leading international research labs, but also with digital publishers
and related companies.
Requirements:
The competition is open to highly qualified, motivated candidates with a
PhD or Master¹s degree in computer science, computational linguistics,
digital humanities or a related field working towards a leadership
position and a scientific career. Both basic research-oriented and
technology-oriented profiles are welcome. Excellent programming skills and
a very good command of spoken and written English are required. The
ability to work independently, personal commitment, teamwork and
communication skills, and a readiness to cooperate with other researchers
from computer science and users in Digital Humanities are required.
Relevant experience and qualities also desirable:
- publication record in peer-reviewed scientific conferences;
- knowledge of statistical methods and machine learning;
- experience with external funding applications and project management;
- development and support in the implementation of university courses.
Applications from women are particularly encouraged. All other things
being equal, candidates with disabilities will be given preference.
The position is a fixed-term contract with an option to extend it,
provided certain conditions are met. We offer the possibility of further
scientific qualification towards a doctoral degree or Habilitation at the
Technische Universität Darmstadt. The salary is based on TV-TU (the
collective bargaining agreement for employees of the Technische
Universität Darmstadt) and individual qualifications. A part-time working
arrangement is possible.
Applications (including CV, details of previous academic work, educational
and professional references, and final thesis and/or three key
publications in electronic form) should be directed to Prof. Dr. Iryna
Gurevych and submitted to erbs at ukp.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de by December
9th, 2014. Applications arriving after the deadline may still be
considered if the funding is still available.
