Dear Victoria,
Coming back from a long stay abroad (Chile) and after having accumulated
DISCOURS postings in the background which I am now browsing through, I
am happy that you recommend the 2 vol Discourse Studies book, which I
edited specifically for this kind of introductory classes in mind: I
was looking for a book for a long time, and could not find one that was
complete enough (i.e. including some CDA etc) so edited a new one
myself. The level is that of my (mostly) international students of
discourse analysis in Amsterdam, and these are often bright and advances
(though not always in DA).
For more basic levels (as US college sophomores etc) I would not know --
my book would be too advanced maybe. Simpler is the Discourse Studies
introduction by Jan Renkema (my colleague from Tilburg here in Holland)
but it does not have any CDA or socio/political dimension.
I am surprised to see that all in all we are finally catching up on
textbooks in DA. Parallel to my book, Sage has started a new series of
introductory books in DA, in which Ruth Wodak already has a book, and
Paul Chilton will publish on political discourse.
Best wishes
Teun
