Here is a bib that I got from Richard Cameron at University of Illinois at
Chicago:
Otto's Annotated Bibiliography on Metaphor
Chilton, Paul & Mikhail Ilyin (1993). Metaphor in political discourse:
thecase of the 'common European house'. Discourse & society 4.1, pp. 7-31.
[Chilton and his collaborators have used contemporary metaphor theory to
interpret European political discourse, although their empiricism is quite
weak.]
Fernández, Celestino & L. R. Pedroza (1982). The Border Patrol and news
media coverage of undocumented Mexican immigration during the 70's: A
content analysis in the sociology of knowledge. California sociologist 5(2).
[One of the few content analyses of newsprint representations of Chicanos.
This work is sound, but without a language oriented theoretical perspective,
the interpretation is limited.]
Gibbs, Raymond (1994). Poetics of the mind: Figurative thought, language and
understanding, Cambridge University Press. [Articulate and up to date
introduction to the cognitivist framework on metaphor. A wealth of
references to clinical validations of the tenets of the linguistic theory on
metaphor.]
Lakoff, George & Mark Johnson. (1980) Metaphors we live by. Chicago
University Press. [Introduced the cognitivist approach to metaphor, which
held that metaphor is not merely ornamental language, but is part of
everyday speech, and moreover affects the way we perceive, think and act.]
Lakoff, George (1991) Metaphor and war: The metaphor system used to justify
war in the Gulf, in Brian Hailet (ed.) Engulfed in war: Just war and the
Persian Gulf. Matsunaga Institute for Peace. [A striking use of cognitivist
metaphor analysis to the Gulf War. Notable in its interpretation; but
strikingly offers almost no empirical validation. Compare to Pancake's
(1993) treatment of the same topic.]
Lakoff, George (1993). The contemporary theory of metaphor, in Andrew Ortony
(ed.) Metaphor and thought, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press.
[Ortony's volume is the best technical one-book overview of philosophical
and linguistic views on metaphor. This article is the fullest recent
characterization of the cognitivist model of metaphor.]
Lakoff, George (1996). Moral discourse: What conservatives know that
liberals don't. University of Chicago Press. [Book length exercise of
metaphor analysis of American political discourse. It relies on deductive
analysis and lacks an independent empirical base.]
Pancake, Ann (1993) Taken by storm: the exploration of metaphor in the
Persian Gulf war. Metaphor & symbolic activity 8(4), 281-295. [Strongly
empirical paper on metaphor which compared headlines in several local
newspapers to the official statements on the Gulf War. About 40 instances
were presented. By way of comparision, I should note that my research will
involve tabular presentations of hundreds of metaphors per topic.]
Quinn, Naomi (1991). The cultural basis of metaphor, in James Fernandez
(ed.) Beyond metaphor: the theory of tropes in anthropology. Stanford
University Press. [While accepting the tenets of the power of prose
metaphor, Quinn offers a major anthropological critique of Lakoff's
cognitivist metaphor theory.]
Reeves, Frank (1983). British racial discourse: a study of British political
discourse about race and race-related matters. Cambridge University Press.
[A content analysis review of 30 years of governmental language which
documented amelioration of the language of race with minimal corresponding
positive changes legistlative or govermental relations change.]
van Dijk, Teun (1993). Principles of critical discourse analysis. Discourse
& society 4(2):249-283. [The CDA principles summarized here are tenets
that
will guide the research project: academic rigor and socially-engaged
scholarship. van Dijk's book-length studies of the media (one cited below)
are also models for the research product that I propose.]
van Noppens, Jean-Pierre & Edith Hols (eds.) (1990). Metaphor II: A
classified bibliography of publications 1985-1990. John Benjamins.
[Thousands of annotated references of topics covered by metaphor studies,
about 30% done within the framework of Lakoff & Johnson's groundbreaking
work.]
van Teeffelen, Toine (1994). Racism and metaphor: the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict in popular literature. Discourse and society 5(3): 381-405.
[Excellent empirically driven analysis of racism based on popular novels.]
Fernandez, James W. (ed.) (1991). Beyond metaphor: the theory of tropes in
anthropology, Stanford University Press.
González, Gilbert G. (1996) A brief review of Chicano educational history in
California: A legacy of inequality. In Aída Hurtado et al. (eds).
Strategic
interventions in education: Expanding the Latina/Latino pipeline. Santa
Cruz, CA: University of California Latino Eligibility Study.
Hayes-Bautista, David E. & Gregory Rodríguez (1996) "Criminalization of the
Latino Identity make fighting gangs much harder" Los Angeles Times,
September 15.
Mazon, Mauricio (1984). The Zoot-suit riots: the psychology of symbolic
annihilation. University of Texas Press.
Omi, Michael & Howard Winatt (1994). Racial formation in the United States,
2nd edition. Routledge.
Santa Ana, Otto (1996a). 'Awash under a brown tide': Metaphor and the
ideology of immigration in American newspaper discourse. Submitted to
Metaphor & symbolic activity.
Santa Ana, Otto (1996b). 'Like an animal I was treated': Anti-immigrant
metaphor in American media discourse. In revision for Discourse & society.
Santa Ana, Otto, Juan Morán & Cynthia Sánchez (forthcoming). Floods of
illegals and waves of nativism: Metaphoric structuring of anti-immigrant
discourse in California politics. UCLA, Chicano Studies Research Center
Working Paper Series.
Smitherman-Donaldson, Geneva & Teun van Dijk (eds.) (1988). Discourse and
discrimination. Wayne State University Press.
Soruco, Gonzalo R. (1996). Cubans and the mass media in South Florida.
University Press of Florida.
van Dijk, Teun (1989). Mediating racism: the role of the media in the
reproduction of racism. John Benjamins.
van Dijk, Teun (1990). Social cognition and discourse. In H. Giles & W.P.
Robinson (eds.) Handbook of language and social psychology. Wiley & Sons
Ltd.
Wetherell, Margaret & Jonathan Potter (1992). Mapping the language of
racism. Colombia University Press.
