Introduction

Hi all,

My name is Victoria Kelly and I have just started the second year of my PhD
in Corpus Linguistics/Discourse Analysis at the University of Limerick,
Ireland. I have been reading everybody's introductions and decided that it
was time to introduce myself.

My doctoral thesis involves the analysis of the use of terms relating to
business and the economy in a corpus of approximately 1 million words  of
contemporary written French with the aim of discovering the main
characteristics of the discourse in this area.

I am encountering two main problems with regard to the construction of my
corpus and I was wondering if maybe some of my colleagues on the Linguist
List could help.

My first problem involves identifying existing French corpora which I could
possibly use. The problem lies herein, if I decide not to create a corpus
but rather to use an existing one it would solve my second problem which is
copyright. I don't know if any of you are familiar with this area but to
sum it up briefly any text (or sample of text) which is to be computerised
and included in a corpus will be under copyright protection and permission
will have to be obtained for its use.

My problem with copyright basically lies in the fact that my 1 million word
corpus will include many sub-corpora all relating to the area of business
and the economy in French, therefore, I will have to gain permission from
many sources for the use of my corpus. Is there any way of avoiding this
obstacle as it is very time-consuming ???

Is there anybody out there who can provide me with information as to where
I could possibly find French corpora relating to my area of research ?
Have any of you had problems with copyright ? If so, maybe you could
enlighten the rest of us.....

Last but not least, it would be great to hear from people who are
undertaking similar research on large corpora.
