Defining discourse

I think Aristotle's notion of first principle is helpful here: from what
assumptions do we wish to begin from?? from what position?  Since I have been
immersed in written discourse lately, I like the metaphor of shuttling,
toggling as a way of fabricating and understanding discourse (the
reading/interpretative/productive activity that feeds into the creation of new
