[Jim Wilce]

Marie Helt, now at Sacramento State I believe, wrote her PhD
dissertation on "like" and the like (discourse particles, quotatives,
stance adverbials). Her dissertation, available through interlibrary
loan, is "Discourse Marker and Stance Adverbial Variation in Spoken
American English: A Corpus-Based Analysis" (Department of English,
Northern Arizona University 1997). A search for pubs by Marie might
yield some more recent work.
