Please note that we are actively accepting applications for the following position, which will remain open until filled. Interviews will be conducted at the meetings of the American Anthropological Association on 11/29-12/1/2001, the Linguistic Society of America on 1/3-1/5/2002, and the International Conference on Austronesian Linguistics  on 1/8-1/11/2002.

University of California, Santa Barbara. The UCSB Linguistics Department seeks to hire a specialist in social and/or cultural approaches to language. The appointment will be tenure-track at the Assistant Professor level, effective July 1, 2002. Candidates should have an active research program in their area of specialization. Experience in social/cultural research incorporating linguistic analysis of naturally occurring language use is essential. We are especially interested in candidates whose research shows theoretical implications for one or more related disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, or cognitive science, as well as linguistics, and who can interact with colleagues and students in interdisciplinary programs at UCSB such as Language, Interaction, and Social Organization (LISO) and Cognitive Science. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and will be expected to teach a range of courses at graduate and undergraduate levels, including courses in linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics. Ph.D. normally required by the time of appointment.
