OF THE SOCIETY FOR TEXT AND DISCOURSE.

SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATIONS

1.- CALL FOR PAPERS 13th ANNUAL MEETING OF ST&D

The Society for Text and Discourse will hold its Thirteenth Annual
Meeting at the Tryp Reina Victoria Hotel in Madrid, Spain, from Thursday
through Saturday, June 26-28, 2003.

 The extended deadline for submitting proposals is FEBRUARY 7, 2003.

The program committees invite interdisciplinary researchers, students
and practitioners working in areas such as cognitive psychology,
discourse comprehension, linguistics, artificial intelligence,
education, instruction, multimedia and information-communication
technology and related fields to submit papers on a variety of topics
including basic cognitive representations and processes in text
comprehension. Text-learner interaction, inference making and causal
understanding, technologies for enhancing reading and reading assessment
and text and picture integration.

2. SOCIETY FOR TEXT AND DISCOURSE

The Society for Text & Discourse is an international society of
researchers who investigate all aspects of discourse processing and text
analysis. The purpose of the Society is to consolidate research in
discourse processing and to enhance communication among researchers in
different disciplines. Therefore, we invite scholars from various
disciplines (e.g., psychology, linguistics, artificial intelligence,
education, sociology, anthropology, communications, and philosophy) to
attend and participate in the Thirteenth Annual Meeting of the Society
for Text and Discourse.

Membership includes various discounts as well as the journal Discourse
Processes published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. This official
journal of the Society for Text and Discourse provides a forum for the
cross-fertilization of ideas from diverse disciplines that share a
common interest in discourse, be it prose comprehension and recall,
dialogue analysis, text grammar construction, computer simulation of
natural language, cross-cultural comparisons of communicative
competence, or related topics.


3. SUBMITTING PROPOSALS

Presentations at the Thirteenth Annual Meeting of the Society for Text
and Discourse can be in the form of POSTERS or SPOKEN PAPERS. The
deadline for submitting proposals for both presentation formats is
FEBRUARY 7, 2003. A Review Committee will review the proposals, and
authors will be notified regarding acceptance by the end of March 2003.
Please note that all presentations must be based on research that is
completed at the time that the proposal is submitted.

Please submit proposals in English to std-madrid2003 at uam.es through
email no later than FEBRUARY 7, 2003. Each proposal must be sent in a
separate e-mail message and the file(s) should be saved as the first
authors name (e.g., Goldman1, Goldman 2, etc). Please, mention
"Madrid2003meeting" in the subject of your email.

NOTE: If you wish to submit a symposium or panel proposal, please
contact Jose A. Leon (std-madrid2003 at uam.es ) prior to preparing the
submission.

A. PROPOSAL INFORMATION

The proposals should include:

-         A title
-         Names and affiliation of author and co-authors
-         Name and full contact address of presenter and co-authors and
their e-mail addresses.
-         Preference for spoken but would be willing to do a poster
(Note
that the number of time slots for spoken presentations will be limited.)
-         Certify that the research submitted for presentation has been
completed (e.g., I certify that research submitted has been completed).
-         A 75-word abstract of the presentation
-         A 2-page summary of the presentation (max. 2000 -words,
including
bibliographic references).

Proposals should be sent in Microsoft Word or PDF format as an
attachment to std-madrid2003 at uam.es

Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed. If for some reason you

B. Submitting Proposals for the OUTSTANDING STUDENT PAPER or the JASON
ALBRECHT OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDS.

There are two awards offered to outstanding student papers.

The Outstanding Student Paper Award is presented annually to the best
spoken paper submitted and presented by a graduate student.
Eligibility: Proposals for the Outstanding Student paper award must
reflect work that is predominantly that of the student, who should also
be appropriately the first author. In the case of multi-author papers,
authors other than the student nominee must indicate that the work is
primarily that of the student.

The Jason Albrecht Outstanding Young Scientist Award is presented
annually to the best spoken paper based on a doctoral dissertation. This
award honors the memory of Jason Albrecht, a promising young text and
discourse researcher who passed away in 1996.
Eligibility: Proposals for the Albrecht award must reflect work that is
based on the nominee's dissertation. In the case of multi-author papers,
the other authors must indicate that the work is based on the nominee's
doctoral dissertation.

Recipients of each award receive a commemorative certificate and a $150
award check Proposals for these two awards are submitted twice: Once to
the regular program review process and separately to the Awards Review
Committee. Deadline for submission is X for both. The proposals undergo
two reviews - one by the regular program committee, with author
identification; and a second by the Awards Review Committee without
author identification. Only proposals that are accepted for inclusion on
the program by the regular review committee are eligible for Awards.

The format for submission to the Awards Review Committee is the same as
that for submission to the regular program review with two exception:

1. Under Names and Affiliations: Nominees' names should be in all caps
or underlined; they should be the first authors of the submitted
proposals. Other authors should check the appropriate statement:

____ I certify that the research is primarily the work of the student
first author. (Outstanding Student Paper Award)

____ I certify that the research is based on the doctoral dissertation
of the first author.  (Albrecht award)

2. Sending the submissions over E-mail: The subject heading for the
e-mail containing an entry for the Outstanding Student Paper Award
should contain the acronym OSPA followed by the last name of the student
submitting the proposal (e.g., OSPA, Sundermeier). The subject heading
for an entry for the Jason Albrecht Outstanding Young Scientist Award
should contain the acronym JAOYSA followed by the last name of the
student submitting the proposal (e.g., JAOYSA, Linderholm).

Evaluation of entries for these two awards will be without author
identification.  Information in Items A and D will be examined after
review and ratings of the proposals.

travels to our ordering system and it is stored in a location not

If you are not a member of the Society, please consider joining now to
take advantage of lower member rates for conference registration. To
join, complete the enclosed new membership form and send it with your
membership fee to the address listed at the bottom on the form. Full
membership rates are $75 for regular membership, $85 for members outside
the U.S. or Canada, and $30 for student memberships. Full membership
includes a subscription to the Society's journal, Discourse Processes.

7. HOW TO RESERVE HOTEL LODGING FOR THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE
SOCIETY FOR TEXT AND DISCOURSE

Participants in the Society for Text and Discourse meeting will receive
a special group rate for hotel rooms at the TRYP REINA VICTORIA HOTEL
located in Plaza de Santa Ana, 14; 28012, Madrid, the heart of the
historical center of Madrid. It is a bour star hotel, located few
minutes walking from Prado Museum, Plaza Mayor, and Puerta del Sol.
There are many restaurants and shopping centers.

The block of rooms will be held until May 25, 2003. Beyond this date,
hotel room availability is not guaranteed; neither is the group rate.
Conference Rates: *Single (Euros 125) or double occupancy (Euros 132)
per night, involved tax and breakfast (free buffet). There are others
possibilities (see the accommodation form). To obtain the special rates
for ST&D conference attendees you must mention at the time of making the
reservation that you are attending the conference. Otherwise, you will
be charged the full rate.

8.- TRANSPORTATION

 Downtown Madrid is accessible from Barajas Airport. Distance from
Barajas Airport  25 km, (17 miles, 35 min. non-rush hour). Taxicab from
Barajas around Euros 30 one way, does not include tip (usually 10%). The
most economical and reliable way to get Metro (Subway) from the airport
to the hotel (SOL station). More info in :
