STEEL CITIES

Exploring the heritage of steel

An interdisciplinary conference to be held in Sheffield, UK

Provisional dates 29th June-2nd July 2006

'Steel Cities' aims to explore the heritage of the steel industry in cities
throughout the world which have been defined as 'Steel Cities'. 

Hosted by England's 'Steel City', Sheffield, it will bring together
academics from disciplines such as archaeology, cultural studies, ethnology,
history and sociolinguistics, along with practitioners and representatives
of community groups, creative industries, museums and galleries, sport and
leisure, tourism, and, of course, the steel industry itself. 

The principal aims are:

.To bring together academics, heritage practitioners, creative artists,
communities and representatives of industry in an exploration of the
heritage of steel
.To bring together representatives from 'Steel cities' across the world
.To share and disseminate good practice in the regeneration of 'steel
cities' in a post-industrial age.
