Aloha ka kou (Hello all),
My name is Michael Geyer-Jones, and I am a Ph.D. student in the Linguistics Department at
the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I am also a full-time instructor of ESL at the NICE Program
(New Intensive Courses in English).
My background is in Political Science (undergrad), TESL (grad), and Sociolinguistics (Ph.D.)
I have taught ESL for 12 years, was a Peace Corps Teacher Trainer in Fiji, and have been
working towards a Ph.D. in Linguistics since 2000.
I am interested in Language and Identity, Language and Ideology, Language and Power,
Critical Discourse Analysis, Conversation Analysis, and Language Death.
More specifically, I am working on research in the area of Fiji Hindi, and its status as a
"broken" language. I have also done research on Hawaiian Creole English, specifically,
discursive practices regarding the word "haole".
I am very pleased to have found this forum, and look forward to great discussions!
Sincerely,
Michael Geyer-Jones
