I've used George Yule's "The Study of Language" as a very brief, down-to-earth
overview of all the basic areas of linguistics when teaching non-majors. Each
chapter is only about 10 pages, lots of examples, and not full of techno-
babble. Very readable, especially as an introduction to the field in general.
