Faculty Development Specialists
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center is a WASC accredited
school that specializes in the teaching of languages. It employs more than
1000 full time faculty who teach, develop courses, and test in 23 different
languages.
Responsibilities of the Faculty Development Specialist: Participates in
determining faculty development needs. Designs, develops, modifies, and
evaluates pre-service and in-service teacher development and leadership
development courses and workshops which reflect current approaches to Foreign
Language (FL) teacher education and organizational leadership. Conducts a
variety of teacher development courses, both in Monterey and at other
locations. Monitors course participants' progress as specified by the course
objectives, observes classes, and provides feedback to teachers. Keeps current
on innovations and developments in the fields of FL education and faculty
development and performs a variety of administrative tasks including course
scheduling, coordination, and maintaining archives with workshop materials.
Qualifications: Must hold a B.A. or M.A. degree and have experience teaching a
foreign language to adult learners. Must be thoroughly familiar with current
FL teaching methodology. Knowledge of principles of FL teacher education and
development is essential and the applicant must be able to teach effectively a
variety of pre-service and in-service faculty development courses to a multi-
cultural, multi-lingual faculty. Requires at least Level 3 English proficiency
as measured on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. The levels
are described in the DLI catalog posted at www.dli.army.mil. Knowledge of
proficiency levels and Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) testing is highly
desirable. Experience with FL curriculum development is a qualifying factor.
The applicant must be able to use a Windows-based desktop computer and the
following programs: Word for Windows, Excel, and a simple database management
program. Ability to conduct Internet searches and use email is required.
Must be able to work in a team environment and to coordinate with DLI personnel
and field units. Occasional travel to field units is expected.
Compensation: The salary and academic rank associated with this position will
be determined by the successful candidates professional qualifications and
contributions. The current salary range for the rank of Assistant Professor is
$36,052 to $65,431. The salary range for Associate Professor is $43,621 to
$78,426.
