> This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary conference aims to provide a vigorous forum for the examination and evaluation of higher education and the contexts where higher education is delivered. The project is committed to the tradition of liberal education, the inherent value of the pursuit of learning and the principle that knowledge must be an end in itself. In particular, the project will explore the nature and aims of higher education, its guiding principles, its practical functions, and its role in society.

> Papers, reports, presentations, and workshops are invited on any of the following themes;

> 1. The Nature and Purpose of Higher Education
> Themes can include: the nature and aims of (higher) education; what a place of higher education should be; historical traditions which shape higher education; the role of liberal arts education; instruction', training' and vocational training'; the changing roles of and between universities, colleges, and polytechnics; the usefulness' of education; the value' of education; learning and distance learning; learning and open learning

> 2. Virtual Learning and Higher Education
> Themes can include: Emerging technologies within Higher Education; International technology challenges; Organizational issues/strategies in Virtual education; Financial issues (faculty pay/timetabling/benefits); Part-time staff/ adjuncts' role between traditional and virtual universities; Contemporary best teaching practices; International educational experiences/lessons; Case studies of experimental projects; Blended Learning approaches; Professional development/ support structures

> 3. Society, Culture and the of Places of Higher Education
> Themes can include: the role of places of higher education in society; the social and institutional contexts of the university and college; the needs of society; reconceiving the place and work of the university and college; multicultural and intercultural education; linguistic and cultural diversity in higher education; anthropologies, sociologies and philosophies of higher education

> 4. Democracy and Education
> Themes can include: the influence of John Dewey; higher education in the context of political ideologies; the individual, the social and the national contexts of higher education; authority, rights and duties; citizenship, social justice and higher education; education and empowerment; influences on policy makers in framing the objectives of higher education; models of higher education and the way they deal with power, participation, access and inequality; challenges to established models.

> 5. Assessment, Audits, and Funding
> Themes can include: external issues impacting on education: funding education; private sector involvement; government involvement; Academic Audit; Research Assessment Exercise; QAA; Teaching Quality Assessment. Fees, grants, and loans.
>
> 6. Intellectual Capital and Property
> Themes can include: the business' of the university - academic freedom and the rise of managerialism; wealth creation; concepts of intellectual and social capital; intellectual copyright; knowledge and research; knowledge and teaching; the public domain and the preservation of knowledge in libraries, museums, galleries; the diffusion of knowledge through publishing, multimedia, and the Internet; higher education and the law.

> 7. Emerging Trends within Higher Education
> Themes will identify emerging trends in higher education.
>
> These are indicative themes. Papers are welcome on these and related themes. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 20th May 2005. If the abstract is accepted for presentation, an 8 page draft paper should be submitted by Friday 15th July 2005.
>
> 300 word abstracts should be submitted to both the Organising Joint Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, PDF or RTF formats.
