Please find below a call for papers for a two day seminar
entitled "Instructed Second Language Learning: State of the Art".
11-12 April 2005, at the University of York, UK
Part of the British Association of Applied Linguistics / Cambridge
University Press Seminar Programme 2005.
CALL FOR PAPERS and AND INVITATION TO REGISTER
This seminar will review recent theoretical and methodological developments
in research into language learning and teaching, in face to face and
virtual settings. The seminar aims to bring together those with research
interests in language learning and teaching from diverse educational
sectors (UK foreign languages, ESOL etc) and explore shared agendas and
potential collaborative research programmes. We will also explore research
implications of current policy and curriculum initiatives in language
education at UK and European level (e.g. the UK National Languages
Strategy, the Common European Framework for Languages).
An important aim of the seminar is to identify key strands of interest
within the community in order to develop a proposal and constitution for a
BAAL Special Interest Group in Language Teaching and Learning.
Discussion will be led by 3 invited speakers:
Alison Mackey, Georgetown University, USA: Interaction and second language
learning
Martin Bygate, University of Lancaster: Research on tasks for language
pedagogy: the need for a pedagogical agenda
Ros Mitchell, University of Southampton: Relationships between current SLA
theory and language pedagogy .
The keynote papers will be pre-circulated, and will form the basis for
extended discussion. There will be a small number of other papers, proposed
by participants, plus a number of round table discussions.
The seminar will run from 1pm on Monday 11th April until 5pm on Tuesday
12th April.
The total cost of the seminar (£105) includes:
attendance at the seminar and refreshments
dinner and accommodation on the York University campus on 11th April
breakfast and lunch on 12th April.
Attendance only (both days): £55 (including refreshments but excluding
lunch, dinner and accommodation).
A maximum of 25 places are available. If you would like to attend, please
fill in the form below (also attached). The deadline for registration for
the event is 11th March.
If you wish to present a paper, please fill in the submission to present
form, providing a 150 word abstract. Papers will each be 30 minutes,
followed by 15 minutes for discussion. Deadline for submission of both
paper proposals and applications for postgraduate scholarships is 27th
January.
Two postgraduate full time student scholarships are available, which will
cover all costs (including food and accommodation but excluding travel).
Applicants should state they are applying for these scholarships on their
registration form, provide proof of full time student status and a short
(maximum 350 word) summary of their research and why the seminar is
relevant to it. If they would like to present, they should also complete
the submission to present form and include the 150 word abstract of the
proposed paper. Preference for award of the scholarships will be given to
postgraduates presenting papers.
Notification of the selection of papers and of the award of student
scholarships will be given by mid February.
