 PhD-Fellowship in Language Acquisition

The Institute of Language and Communication, University of Southern
Denmark, Odense, offers a PhD- Fellowship for appointment February 1st 2005
or as soon as possible thereafter, at The Center for Language Acquisition.
The PhD-stipend is advertised in affiliation with the WHISPER-project (the
Widex Hearing Impaired Speech Research-Project) with the title 'The
interaction between segmentation strategies and mental representations of
language sounds and language production in normal and hearing impaired
populations' financed by Widex A/S and University of Southern Denmark. The
aim of the project is to investigate the relations between segmentation
strategies and mental representations of language sounds in both normal and
hearing impaired populations. The project will include the establishment of
new experimental lab-facilities at the University of Southern Denmark.
The PhD-project will be one of several sub-projects in the overall
WHISPER-project, whose common general objective is to investigate the early
processing of speech-sounds in normally hearing and hearing impaired
children, paying special attention to whether a reduced access to the
auditory signal - with the use of different types of amplification -
implies a diverging development of mental mechanisms and processes in
relation to the processing of sounds, representation of sounds and speech
production as compared to the development in hearing children. The
PhD-stipend will include experimental investigation of the early phases of
the acquisition of speech in normally hearing and hearing impaired
children. The selected applicant will be part of the research-milieu at the
Center for Language Acquisition as well as the established PhD-network at
the Institute of Language and Communication. Relevant educational
prerequisites could be e.g. psychology (preferably developmental or
cognitive), psycho-linguistics or language psychology, phonetics,
"lab-phonology" or speech pathology. Experience with working experimentally
is an advantage. The job does not necessarily require basic Danish language
skills prior to employment, which opens the position up for foreign
applicants with relevant background and research interests. A specific
project description will be drawn up within the first part of the
stipend-period. Applicants can obtain further information concerning the
project as well as the stipend by contacting project-director,
Center-director Dorthe Bleses (see contact information) or by reading the
 full announcement on www.jobs.sdu.dk
Engagement as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops
automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the stipend is not
allowed to have other paid employment during the 3-year period.
Application must be forwarded on a special application-form which can be
ordered from the Faculty of Humanities, Phone: (+45) 6550 2931 - or you can
find the form on the University´s Homepage:
 http://www.humaniora.sdu.dk ;
As part of the overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, an
interview may be applied. Employment as a salaried PhD Research Fellow is
 governed by a
protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance
and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on 4 April 2003.
The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of
age, gender, religious affiliation or ethnic background.
Please send the application, marked "Job ID 056003", including enclosures
