Dear all,

I thought you might like to know that a completely new version of
Problem-Posing at Work: English for Action (formerly ESL for Action) which
Nina Wallerstein and I co-authored has just been published by Grassroots
Press along with a sister volume, Problem-Posing at Work: A Popular
Educator's Guide. Both can be ordered from

http://www.literacyservices.com/

Here's a blurb:

Two new books for workplace education from Grassroots Press!

Problem-Posing at Work: English for Action
by Elsa Auerbach and Nina Wallerstein

Problem-Posing at Work: A Guide for Popular Educators
by Nina Wallerstein and Elsa Auerbach

English for Action: Problem-Posing at Work is a new and completely revised
version of ESL for Action which focuses on workplace themes and issues
related to the working lives of immigrants and refugees. Inspired by the
problem-posing approach of Paulo Freire, this book invites learners to share
and analyze their experiences, to acquire the language, skills, and
information necessary for greater power over their circumstances, and to
strategize together for changes. This revised edition updates the 1987 text
to incorporate a focus on the effects of globalization on workers¹ lives;
its scope is expanded to include information about Canada as well as the
U.S., and it is substantially reformatted for increased accessibility. It
includes authentic photos and stories of workers active in their workplaces
and communities. The text is intended for intermediate to advanced ESL
students in workplace, pre-vocational, vocational, community-based, union
and labor education programs.

Special features:

Contextualized grammar, literacy, and communication skills

 Information about workers¹ rights

Tools for investigating workplace health and safety and other issues

Photos of immigrant workers by David Bacon

Stories and narratives of immigrant workers (including excerpts from
Miriam Ching Louie¹s Sweatshop Warriors, South End Press)

Readings and analysis about the effects of globalization on immigrant
workers and the responses of worker organizations

Information relevant to U.S. and Canadian work contexts

Problem-Posing at Work: A Guide for Popular Educators is a new book which
explores Freirian approaches to adult education, with a particular focus on
immigrants and workers. It presents the underlying rationale for this
teaching approach, strategies and tools for enacting it, a case study of a
problem-posing cycle by workplace educator Jenny Utech, an analysis of the
role of social change pedagogy within globalization struggles, and an
extensive resource list. While the book draws on prior work of the authors
(including Wallerstein¹s Language and Culture in Conflict and Auerbach¹s
Making Meaning, Making Change), it extends these texts to build on the
accumulated knowledge and experience of educators who have been inspired by
Freire¹s work over the past several decades.

Available in January 2005 from Grassroots Press.
