CALL FOR PAPERS
THE CHILD AND THE BOOK
CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE
7-9 APRIL 2006, UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE, ENGLAND
Papers are invited for the third annual postgraduate
conference, The Child and the Book, to be held at the
University of Newcastle in the UK from April 7-9 2006.
This inter-disciplinary event, inaugurated in 2004 at
Roehampton University and hosted in 2005 by the
University of Antwerp, attracts delegates from all
over the world and provides a unique opportunity for
postgraduate students to meet, present and discuss
their research.
The title for this year's conference is Children's
Literature: From the Past to the Future. Abstracts
should in some way address this theme, although, as in
previous years, the conference is inclusive to all
disciplines and research areas and the final programme
will reflect the diversity of current postgraduate
studies. Thematic strands might include:
Literary theory and children's literature
Gender studies masculinist, feminist or queer
theory approaches
Ideology and/or reader response
The voice of the child
Children's literature in translation
Publishing and children's literature
New voices: new trends
This year's conference will span three days and will
incorporate a visit to the new Seven Stories, The
Centre for Children's Books (www.sevenstories.org.uk),
as well as offering specialist research methods
training in Childrens Literature Studies developed by
the Childrens Literature Unit in the School of
English at the University of Newcastle. It will also
coincide with the annual board meeting of the
International Research Society for Childrens
Literature, whose members will attend the conference.
Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be emailed
to Michele Gill at Michele.Gill at Newcastle.ac.uk. The
deadline for all proposals is December 16 2005.
