Call for Papers
“Challenging the Racial State in the 21st Century:
Youth, Resistance, and New Possibilities for Democracy.”
Journal: Educational Foundations
Guest Editors: Julio Cammarota (The University of Arizona)
Shawn Ginwright (San Francisco State University)
The theme for a forthcoming special issue of Educational Foundations
focuses on the institutional barriers to young people’s democratic
participation and how they negotiate, challenge, and resist racial
oppression. Youth, who grossly lack political and economic power, use
school walkouts, marches, and other forms of civil disobedience to
confront policies and transform institutions to better meet their
needs. We are particularly interested in papers that provide a racial
analysis of educational and community change among young people.
Manuscripts may discuss how young people frame problems of
educational injustice through a broader political analysis of power
as well as how they operate within networks of intergenerational
allies, collaborations with other youth groups, and partnerships with
larger political organizations. This call will allow scholars and
practitioners to describe how young people render their schools and
communities more responsive to their need to be active citizens
prepared to promote social justice and democracy.
Educational Foundations is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal with
an audience of K-16 educators, administrators, and researchers,
