SUMMER SCHOOL IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS 17th-27th JULY 2006

DIRECTOR: PROFESSOR VIVIAN COOK

A two week summer course in applied linguistics for practising teachers of EFL and MA level students in applied linguistics. The course is designed to acquaint practicing teachers of EFL in diverse countries with the main elements and trends in applied linguistics, concentrating on recent second language acquisition research and current views of teaching and learning in the EFL classroom. Participants will also attend the SLA Summit at no extra cost.

Cost: around £1450 including course fees, accommodation and lunches. One free place will be awarded to an applicant who could not otherwise attend

MODELS OF SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION 

This annual one-day event allows well-known authorities on second language acquisition to provide state-of-the-art presentations of their particular positions. This year it features Mike Sharwood-Smith (Heriot-Watt University) on MOGUL (Modular On-line Growth of Language), Li Wei (University of Newcastle upon Tyne) on Sociolinguistics of Bilingualism and Vivian Cook (University of Newcastle upon Tyne) on multi-competence.

Cost: around £75 including lunch

These are organised within the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which has a strong staff in applied linguistics and offers successful MA and IPhD programmes in applied linguistics.
