Bandar Seri Begawan – The government of Japan will donate a variety of
Japanese language teaching materials and books on Japan to Universiti Brunei
Darussalam (UBD) at a ceremony to be held on March 21, at 2.30pm.

At the ceremony, the Ambassador of Japan to Brunei, Mr Yoshinobu Nisaka will
hand the materials and books over to Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman, Vice
Chancellor of UBD.

These language materials and books are made available through the Japanese
Language Materials Donation Programme and the Library Support Programme of the
Japan Foundation --an institution devoted to cultural exchanges under the
government of Japan.

These programmes are aimed at promoting Japan and to raise awareness on the
aspects of Japanese lifestyle, culture, history, politics, education and its
economy.

This is the third consecutive year where a donation of Japanese language
teaching materials has been made to UBD. The current donation contains a wide
variety of teaching materials and resources, including textbooks and cassette
tapes.

They are donated to the Language Centre to complement its Japanese language
courses, which began in 2001 and have become popular among students.

UBD Library meanwhile is receiving 24 books this year, taking the total number
of books contributed since 1996 to 207.

Similar contributions of books have been made by Japan to Brunei Darussalam
over the past several years.

Since 1995, the total number of books donated amounts to 447, including 152
books to the Language and Literature Bureau, Ministry of Culture, Youth and
Sports, and 88 books to SEAMEO VOCTECH.

This year's donation includes an array of interesting books such as `Imaging
Japan: The Japanese Tradition and its Modern Interpretation', `Social
Evolution Economic Development and Culture', `Japanese Educational
Productivity', and `The Japanese High School: Silence and Resistance'.
