EVERY morning, about 20 minutes or so before lunch, the 18 children in Lauren Kolbeck's Year 2 classroom at Public School 29 in New York City are left to read quietly to themselves. Asking a bunch of seven-year-olds to do anything quietly for this long may seem about as sensible as asking them to ignore cupcakes. But these children are managing.
