Learning from international experience of
Teaching English to Young Learners:
examining the evidence

An international conference focusing on young learner policy
Venue: Regional Institute of Education, South India, Bangalore

3-6 January 2008

Conference Theme

Teaching English to Young Learners is a rapidly growing field
internationally, creating huge demand in both the public and private sector.
However, implementing young learner programmes successfully in state
primary school classrooms is a challenging enterprise, given the scale. This
conference will consider and compare different countries’ experiences of
implementing young learner English programmes in the state school system
so as to understand the kind of conditions which may promote successful
outcomes and to identify obstacles to success.

Aims of Conference
• to provide an international forum for the sharing and dissemination of
insights (via detailed case studies) into the implementation of TEYL
programmes in a range of international contexts
• to provide a forum for networking among those involved in policy
making, researching and implementing YL programmes across the world
• to encourage the establishment of collaborative exchanges and young
learner projects across regions or countries
• to identify policy and other issues relevant to the implementation of TEYL
programmes and directions for research into YL programmes

Call for papers
We welcome proposals for country case study presentations on Young
Learner programmes and papers showcasing interesting TEYL innovations
and experiments from around the world. Deadline for receipt of abstracts:
3rd September 2007. For further information, please visit the Conference
