Panama: Move for Chinese in Schools
The National Assembly has taken a step toward making the teaching of
Mandarin compulsory in all schools, the BBC reported. Supporters of the
bill, which has received conditional approval in the first of three
debates, say increasing the number of Chinese speakers would help increase
Panama's competitiveness in the world, the report said. It said the
proposed legislation set out a time frame of 10 years for Mandarin to be
taught in all schools. Chinese teachers would be allowed to immigrate to
help train local teachers.
