4th ADALEST CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PAPERS 

The Department of Languages & Social Sciences Education of the Faculty of Education at the University of Botswana will host the 4th conference of the Association for the Development of African Languages in Education, Science and Technology (ADALEST). The conference, under the theme, 'African Languages in the Context of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)' will be held in Gaborone, Botswana, from 7-9 July, 2008.

PREVIOUS ADALEST CONFERENCES 

The first ADALEST conference, under the theme: Development of Indigenous African Languages for Education and Technology in the 21st Century, was held in Kisumu (Kenya) in 2000. In 2002, ADALEST held its second conference in Pretoria (South Africa). The theme was: Promoting Education, Science and Technology Through African Languages. The third ADALEST conference, which took place in Mangochi (Malawi) in 2004, carried the theme - Making Multilingual Education a Reality for All. This conference was held concurrently with Malawi's fifth national symposium on language in education.

4th ADALEST CONFERENCE

The 4th ADALEST Conference will be based on the theme, 'African Languages in the Context of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)' and the following are the sub- themes:

The role of African Languages Education in the era of the UNDESD

Current Trends in African Languages Education

Indigenous Ways of Knowing in the UNDESD: Marginalized or Promoted?

Curriculum Opportunities/Challenges in Education for Sustainability

Globalization, Internationalization and African Languages Education

African Languages Education, ethics and action, and the UNDESD

Environmental Education, training and lifelong learning

The conference targets, among the others, the following participants:

Language scholars,

Language practitioners,

Language activists and other members of the civil  society,

Language planners/policy makers,

Development Partners,

Media organizations.

Environmental practitioners

Education policy planners/policy makers

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

Abstracts of not more than 300 words should be emailed to the following panel: Dr Dudu Jankie (jankied at mopipi.ub.bw); Dr Rose Letsholo (Letsholor at mopipi.ub.bw) & Dr William Maila (mailam at mopipi.ub.bw). Authors should present the abstracts in 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman 12, with the author(s) names, affiliation and contact details (postal address, fax, phone, email) included. The sub-themes should be specified.  After the acceptance of the abstract, the author or authors should write up the conference paper and be ready to present it paper at the conference.

KEY DATES

The deadline for the submission of abstracts: 29 February, 2008. 

Notification about acceptance of papers: 15 March, 2008.

Conference duration: July 7 - 9, 2008.

CONFERENCE FEES

Participants will pay P350.00 (about 60 US Dollars) as conference fees. This fee covers registration, bag, stationery and refreshments.

TRAVEL, BOARD & LODGING

Participants will be responsible for making their own arrangements for travel, board and lodging. However, the conference organizers will furnish participants with information on the availability of hotels, motels and lodges in Gaborone.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

In general application for Visa to enter Botswana should include the following:

1. Passport copies

2. Two identical Passport photos

3. Covering letter from host.

4. Non-refundable fee of P500.00 per application

5. Fully completed Visa Application Form D.

6. Visa application processing takes 7 to 14 working days: Visa application must be done long before departure from country of origin.
