MAKING ENGLISH WORK / Signs kindle interest in English

 

Living in an English-speaking environment is perhaps the best way to acquire proficiency in the language. But for Rieko Mukai, 37, president of King and Queen International Inc., a company that runs an Internet shop and clothing stores, her English improved more in Japan than in the time she spent in the United States. 

 

After graduating from a junior college in Fukuoka, Mukai studied English at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan., for about a year. She did a homestay in the rural town for about a month before moving to a school dormitory. 

 

Although she could not speak much English at first, her English improved dramatically as she had to use the language in the dormitory.
