Tongan Education Curriculum is a Garland

The Ministry of Education in a move to upgrade the Curriculum for Primary, 
Secondary and Tertiary levels in Tonga has adopted the philosophy and 
methodology of kakala by Tongan Professor Konai Helu Thaman.

According to Principal Education Officer at the Curriculum Development Unit – 
CDU, Mrs. Kalala Unu(pictured left), the move will elevate the Tongan education 
system and at the same time create an awareness of the important link between 
education and culture particularly in the area of teacher-learner education.

“It is a determination to reclaim and reconceptualise teaching and learning in 
a culturally meaningful way. Professor Konai Thaman, who is well known to all 
Tongans, has over the years developed a personal philosophy and framework for 
teaching and research that is sourced from Tonga’s values in general and that 
is the philosophy of Kakala,” said Kalala Unu.
