Role Purpose


To design, develop and deliver a range of programmes of study within a discipline in line with the School's teaching strategy and undertake and deliver research programmes.


The post will include programme co-ordination and delivery of the MA TEFL. Teaching will be at undergraduate and postgraduate level including dissertation supervision (on campus and by distance). It will also involve collaborative team-work on programmes such as MEd Bilingualism in Education, EdD and BA programmes. The post holder will also contribute to research within the Centre for Research on Multilingualism.


Main Responsibilities



To teach and examine courses at all levels, i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate and/or higher research degree students, through lectures, seminars and personal supervision:

*	
	Teaching programmes will include MA TEFL, MEd Bilingualism in Education and BA English 
*	
	To undertake programme co-ordination of MA TEFL. 
*	
	Teaching will be at undergraduate and postgraduate level including dissertation supervision (on campus and by distance). 
*	
	Involvement in collaborative team-work on programmes such as MEd Bilingualism in Education, EdD and BA programmes. 
*	
	Contribution and development of the MEd Bilingualism in Education programme for the international market
*	
	Collaborate with colleagues on the development and teaching of other language related modules in the School of Education
*	
	Explore the potential to develop new areas and modes of teaching and learning relating to TEFL and other modules in the School.
*	
	To plan and review own teaching approach
*	
	To develop and apply innovative teaching approaches and materials to enable learning and enthuse students
*	
	To develop programme proposals and contribute to the wider design of the School's teaching programme
*	
	To undertake the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining to ensure that students' progress is being monitored and reported in line with the School's procedures
*	
	To develop approaches to teaching and learning which are appropriate for the University and subject area and reflect developing practice elsewhere
*	
	To supervise and examine postgraduate research students, both within and outwith the University

To plan, design and co-ordinate broad research activities and programmes:

*	
	To contribute to the development of research strategies for the School
*	
	To develop methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued and that add to the knowledge/understanding appropriate to the discipline
*	
	To publish results of research in articles and/or books which lead to an enhanced reputation in the subject area and enhance the School's research profile
*	
	Undertake personal research and develop a strong publications profile
*	
	To develop innovative research proposals and lead funding bids which develop and sustain research support in the specialist area
*	
	To secure research funding for innovative projects, to include involvement in collaborative research tenders
*	
	To project manage research activities, including the supervision and instruction of other research staff
*	
	To contribute to current research activity both at national and international levels
*	
	To contribute to the School's Centre for Research and Multilingualism {MOSAIC} and boost the existing strengths in areas such as TEFL, bilingualism and discourse analysis
*	
	To enable existing successful funded research from ESRC and DfES to be extended by fostering further collaborative work
*	
	To engage in scholarly activity that will enhance the School's and University's reputation such as membership of academic bodies and external examining bodies. 

Dimensions 


The job requires a high level of expertise in the subject area, awareness and experience of research in order to assess at Masters and Doctoral level, the ability to initiate and manage complex course and, above all the ability to apply the requisite knowledge and skills with immediacy.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required

*	
	PhD, with experience 
*	
	Specialist knowledge and experience of TEFL
*	
	relevant prior teaching experience at graduate level
*	
	a record of research and publication in a relevant field
*	
	good presentational and ICT skills
*	
	the ability to work flexibly as a member of a team and to take initiatives
*	
	experience of working with international students
*	
	a democratic means of academic planning and working as a member of a team; and
*	
	administrative and leadership skills

Desirable Criteria:

*	
	supervising masters level dissertations and
*	
	willingness to undertake occasional teaching visits overseas

	Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with the Head of School.

	Carry out administrative duties in relation to leading modules and teams of lecturers

	Preparing course information for students, scrutinising marks and awards, attending exam boards, writing to students and dealing with enquiries and applications
