Dear Nancy, but issues of culture, psychological adjustments, peer issues and influences in acculturation and/or assimilation processes are also part of the reality of ELLs, Immigrants, and Refugees in the Elementary School and they would be worth addressing as well.

  Just something to think about!

Conversation: Proposal for New AERA SIG ELLs, Immigrants & Refugees
Subject: Proposal for New AERA SIG ELLs, Immigrants & Refugees

Hello Friends and Colleagues:

We are sending this e-mail to ask for your support in the creation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) with AERA. The new SIG will be called “ELLs, Immigrants, and Refugees in Secondary Schools.” It’s purpose is to address and seek out specific knowledge dealing with the lives of adolescents from this particular student community (and even the sub-groups that fall within), which will provide researchers and educators who commit their professional and personal lives to these students a base where their voices may be illuminated and heard. We, the organizers of this new SIG, believe that there is a call to create such a SIG because of the continued complexities and uniqueness associated with these student groups at the secondary level within the U.S. Beyond just language, this SIG will address issues of culture, psychological adjustments, peer issues and influences in acculturation and/or assimilation processes, teacher perceptions of and preparation for working
effectively with such students groups, and the role(s) of politics in the lives of these students and their presence in our schools and communities, among others. *Note: A copy of the new SIG proposal is attached.

*If you are a member of AERA (or will soon become one), and you are interested in joining this new SIG then do the following:
1) reply to this e-mail by stating: “I currently am a member of AERA and I will join the proposed SIG should it come into existence.”
2) following this statement, please provide your full name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and AERA member ID number.

Furthermore, if you know of any friends and/or colleagues who are members of AERA and you think would be interested in joining this SIG, please forward this e-mail to them.

If you are interested in joining this SIG, a response within 2 – 3 days would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,
