35% of Beijing residents have foreign language skills
Beijing has a foreign language population of 5.5 million, accounting for 35 percent of the total resident population. Generally speaking, people who can understand some simple articles; can engage in simple conversation; and whose foreign language capabilities reach the low to intermediate level, make up the foreign language population, according to Beijing Evening.
As was learned from the 2008 Beijing foreign language activity and regulation of English logos in public places meeting, the city has replaced more than 390,000 English logos in public places. The city's project to translate Chinese menus into English is complete; and the translation of job titles and organization names into English is in full swing.
