DOE Turns Schools Into 'Test Prep Factories'

 

The city's public school children are up to their ears in standardized tests this year, most of which aren't even necessary for advancing to the next grade, the public advocate and parents asserted last week. 



An analysis of the city Department of Education's testing schedule by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum revealed that students this school year must take up to a dozen standardized exams in addition to their regular load of tests and homework.

 

Third-graders, for instance, must take a city-mandated exam, on average, once every three weeks, the analysis found. Worst off are English language-learning students, who take tests nearly every 10 days under a dual language curriculum.
