Hello Laura--
MIT psychologist Paul A. Kolers did research in the 1960s that
involved read-aloud protocols
of mixed English-French text with French-English bilinguals that
resulted in some of the kinds
of behaviors you describe.
Here are a couple of references that I have at hand. They are old, but
you may find them of interest.
Kolers, P.A. 1966. Reading and Talking Bilingually. American Journal
of Psychology, 79.
________. 1968. Reading is Only Incidentally Visual."In K.S. Goodman
and J. T. Fleming (Eds.)
Psycholinguistics and the Teaching of Reading. Newark, DE:
International Reading Association.
________ 1970. Three Stages of Reading. In H. Levin and J. Williams
(Eds.) Basic Studies on
Reading. New York: Harper and Row.
I would be interested in knowing about more recent studies on this
topic if you turn up some.
Regards,
Rick Jackson
