How the Muang Thai Foundation is helping educate children in the northeast of Thailand

 

In his sixties, Nantachai Mejudhon, a retired university lecturer in engineering, still drives over 1,000km every week to a poor village in the northeastern province of Roi Et to teach local children there. Since 2001, this has been a routine job for his team of four volunteer teachers.

Despite her PhD in English language teaching from New Zealand, Ubolwan at first found it very difficult to teach older students who did not even know the English alphabet. 

 

According to her, some Grade 9 students cannot write the English alphabet. Still, the couple's teaching experiences have helped them with the work at Ban None. 

 

Ubolwan said, "Everyone should learn by heart so that they feel English is fun and easy. We use games, dramas and self-composed songs like I'm an Isan Girl, I Want to Learn English."
