Research Associate
Division: Language Education and Academic Development (LEAD)
Hours per week: Full time (35)
Salary: $48,420 - $73,973 FTE per annum, depending upon qualifications
Position Available: June 2009
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Work as part of a research team on reviewing literature, curriculum development, and professional development for experimental studies focused on literacy learning in language-minority students, sheltered instruction, and ESL/bilingual instruction. Ample opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Collaborate in the development and validation of vocabulary and comprehension assessments for language minority children in elementary and middle grades
* Collaborate in the development of curriculum to build vocabulary and comprehension in elementary and middle grades language minority students
* Assist in developing sheltered science curriculum for middle grades language minority students
* Plan and conduct professional development workshops for teachers related to implementing sheltered science curriculum
* Create appropriate databases and supervise data entry for projects described above
* Assist in data analysis (most likely qualitative)
* Correspond with co-researchers, other colleagues, project teachers, and others as needed
* Respond to inquiries about projects
* Other tasks as assigned.
NOTE: Some travel will be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completed PhD or ABD (all but dissertation) status preferred
Experience: Knowledge of language and literacy instruction in K-8 ESL or bilingual classrooms in the U.S. required; preference for candidates with classroom teaching experience in the U.S. and experience developing curriculum; excellent writing (in English), organizational, and computer skills needed; and ability to work both independently and with colleagues.
