Basic facts about Confucius Institutes
The Chinese government decided to set up Confucius Institutes in cooperation with foreign partners back in 2003 in a bid to promote the teaching of the Chinese language and the understanding of the Chinese culture worldwide.
Sponsored by China's National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the first such institute opened in Seoul, capital city of South Korea in 2004.
As of December 2008, 249 Confucius Institutes and 56 Confucius classrooms have been established in 78 countries.
