To improve teaching standards, first improve teachers
It is true that some universities are providing undergraduate courses in basic literacy skills. Monash University has introduced a first-year course in remedial writing with a particular emphasis on "language mechanics".
According to Baden Eunson, a Monash lecturer and convenor of the new course, about 90 per cent of first year graduates cannot identify parts of speech.
Monash is not alone. This year Swinburne University has begun to test the entrance literacy skills of domestic and international students because of concern over standards.
