Changes to state assessment exam remove barrier for English Language Learners

 

Consider these two questions:

What is the best way to revise the sentence above?

What is the best way to write the sentence above?

 

For the native English speaker, they might be interchangeable. But for the English language learner, knowing the definition of "write" versus misunderstanding "revise" could mean the difference between being able to show mastery of a concept or being stumped because of a single word.

 

Tennessee education officials want to remove the language barrier for English Language Learners on achievement assessments, and have modified the exams for the students, reducing wordiness and complexity of sentence structure and removing words with multiple meanings.
