ELL/Bilingual Education, Assistant Professor

The College of Education at the University of Washington/Seattle announces an opening for a

tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in ELL/Bilingual Education. This is a

nine-month academic year appointment on a full-time basis. Across the world, nation, and state,

schools struggle to implement meaningful instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse

(CLD) students. We seek a scholar who can provide research-based approaches to assist schools

in delivering an excellent education to CLD students. We seek a scholar who engages with

classroom practice, thinks about practice in the broader context of the social, political, and

cultural issues surrounding the schooling of immigrant students, and brings expertise in one or

more of the following areas:

* The interface between race, ethnicity, and culture in the teaching and learning of

CLD students.

* Instructing CLD students in and through the content areas (math, science,

literacy, social studies)

* Meeting the needs of CLD students with special needs/disabilities

* First/second language development

* Classroom-based, or large-scale assessment, of language and content learning

for CLD students.

Responsibilities for this position include: (1) conducting research in the area of ELL/Bilingual

Education, (2) teaching doctoral and masters courses related to ELL/Bilingual Education, (3)

advising and mentoring students in the masters and doctoral program, and (4) teaching graduatelevel

teacher education courses related to ELL/Bilingual Education. University of Washington

faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Candidates should demonstrate rich practical experience educating CLD students, excellent

teaching skills, demonstrated potential for producing and publishing high-quality research, and a

record or strong potential for grant activities. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in

Education or related field at the time of appointment. To support the College's technology goals,

candidates should be fluent with current technologies pertinent to their field for both research and

teaching.

Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to join a dynamic group of scholars interested in

making a difference in public education. Candidates with linguistic and cultural skills that can

facilitate meaningful and substantive engagement with recent immigrant students and

communities are especially encouraged to apply. The position begins September 16, 2010.
