Starting in 2008 (for 2009) and continuing for the past three years, the Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education has consulted with other Federal agencies to learn which regions and languages of the world are critical to carrying out the work of those agencies. Summaries of these consultations are then posted on OPE's website as "CONSULTATION WITH FEDERAL AGENCIES ON AREAS OF NATIONAL NEED."

The consultation summary report for 2011 was posted recently and includes analysis by 13 federal departments or other large agencies. Languages listed include not only those previously identified as "critical," but also such languages as French, Spanish, German and Russian, with attention to such regions as the Western Hemisphere, Eastern Europe and Africa.
