Research Assistant for Outreach, EHLS - Center for Applied Linguistics


CAL Classification: Research/Program Assistant III
Salary: $39,000 - $49,000 depending on qualifications
Division: Language Testing Division (LTD)
Hours Per Week: 35 hrs/wk (100%)

English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) is an English for professional purposes program that prepares native speakers of critical languages for positions with the federal government. The 8-month program involves 6 months of full-time, intensive instruction followed by 2 months of part-time study. EHLS is funded by the National Security Education Program (U.S. Department of Defense) and managed by the Center for Applied Linguistics. All instruction currently takes place at Georgetown University.

The EHLS program assistant for outreach reports to the EHLS associate director for outreach and the EHLS program director, and works with other CAL staff.

Basic Function:

Provide support functions related to all aspects of participant recruiting and admission to program. Assist with research on heritage language communities; development and implementation of national recruiting campaign; and applicant interview and selection process. Update and maintain program website.

Primary Responsibilities:

*	Support the establishment and maintenance of relationships with community organizations, community-based media, and other recruiting venues 
*	Conduct research on locations and sizes of heritage language communities in the United States 
*	Assist with an annual national-level recruiting campaign, including a multi-city advertising plan, information sessions in key cities, and other aspects TBD 
*	Update and maintain program website 
*	Develop and produce program awareness materials, including brochures and print/online advertisements 
*	Participate as needed in applicant interview process 
*	Assist with scheduling of entry testing for provisionally selected applicants and exit testing of program participants 
*	Provide support and coordination for meetings 
*	Participate as appropriate in site visits to program site 
*	Collaborate with and provide support to other program staff as needed 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Education: Bachelor's degree required; degree in Language/Linguistics, Education, Communications, Marketing, or related discipline preferred.

Experience:

*	A minimum of three years of professional experience is required, including experience planning and coordinating complex tasks, conducting Internet-based research, manipulating and creating graphics, and editing web pages. Experience authoring web pages and familiarity with communities of English language learners from the Middle East and North Africa, South Central Asia, and East Asia strongly preferred. 

Skills:

*	Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Familiarity with web-based code and FTP clients such as Dreamweaver strongly preferred; experience writing HTML and Javascript and familiarity with Adobe Flash preferred. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. 

Other Requirements:

*	Must be flexible, organized, attentive to detail, and able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Must have strong interpersonal skills and work well both independently and collaboratively. A high level of intercultural awareness and understanding, demonstrated through relevant previous experience, is strongly preferred. Must be available for travel for program marketing and recruiting purposes.
