Please find the attached call for papers for the 57th International Linguistic Association (ILA) Conference. Papers in any area of linguistics are appropriate; however, the theme of this year's conference is LANGUAGE AND INSTITUTIONS. Location: New York City (details below). Plenary speakers are listed below.

This theme is so relevant to those of us conducting research on language and literacy in educational contexts, as well as those doing doing research in applied linguistics more broadly (including institutional research on language/talk in medicine, law, social work, government, urban planning, religion, family, etc.).
Please consider submitting an abstract.

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS IS JANUARY 15, 2012! Details for submitting your abstract are below.

If you have a moment, kindly pass this call for papers on to colleagues and students in your department. Have a lovely winter holiday!

Call for Papers
The International Linguistic Association (ILA) invites submissions for its 57th annual conference to be held at Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, April 13-15, 2012. Papers in any area of linguistics are appropriate; however, the theme of this year's conference is LANGUAGE AND INSTITUTIONS. For this conference, participants are invited to examine how language functions within institutions and/or how institutional contexts shape language. These studies may focus on a wide variety of institutions including, but not limited to, education, medicine, social work, law enforcement, urban planning, religion, government, and family. Papers addressing the theme may report qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method research studies. While we encourage submissions relevant to the theme, we welcome proposals in all areas of linguistics.

Abstract submission (submission deadline is coming up: January 15, 2012!)

Please submit abstracts (300-word maximum) to http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/ila2012. You can submit abstracts starting on November 15th. The submission deadline is January 15, 2012. Authors of submissions will be notified of acceptance by February 15, 2012. Time allotted for presentations will be 20 minutes for delivery of the paper plus 5 minutes for discussion.

Proposals may be made for 1) paper presentations, 2) panel presentations, or 3) poster presentations.

Proposals for paper presentations and poster presentations have the same format (abstract of 300 words or less; see above). When submitting, please specify whether you would like to do a paper presentation or a poster session.

Panel session proposals should be submitted by the panel organizer as a single document that includes: a) an overall summative abstract for the panel (no more than 300 words) and b) individual abstracts of 300 words each for each speaker. An individual panel session can run up to 2 hours; please specify your preferred length, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Panels will not have discussants.

Proposals will be blind-reviewed for their originality, quality, and breadth of relevance. In addition, panel proposals will be evaluated for the coherence and complementarity of their individual presentations.

More details about the conference, including registration fees and housing, may be found on-line at http://ilaword.org/site/annual-conference/. Questions may be sent to Conference Chair, Professor Maureen Matarese at the following email address: conference at ilaword.org <mailto:conference at ilaword.org> , or Annika Wendt at awendt at ilaword.org
