BAAL / Cambridge University Press Applied Linguistics Seminar Programme 2014:
Languages in the UK: Bridging the gap between the classroom and the community in language learning
Keynote Speakers:
Professor Rosamond Mitchell, University of Southampton
Professor Kenneth MacKinnon, University of Aberdeen
May 29 and 30, 2014
Lews Castle College, University of the Highlands and the Islands, Stornoway,
Isle of Lewis
This two-day seminar will address issues of language learning and its relationship to community use of language, drawing on the three strands of language learning most pertinent to the evolving social composition and linguistic diversity in the UK:
* English language learning of migrants to the UK
* Learning of UK autochthonous minority languages, such as Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish
* Maintenance of heritage languages of migrants to the UK, such as Punjabi and Cantonese
The seminar will focus on the challenges speakers of all three strands face when transitioning from classroom learning to community use of the language. We invite papers from academics and practitioners on any aspect of language learning within one (or more) of these three strands. Seminar participation is restricted to twenty places. There will be no fee for seminar attendance, but attendees will be expected to pay for all travel/accommodation/meals/refreshments themselves.
Please submit an abstract (in English) of no more than 300 words and a statement of no more than 200 words explaining how attendance will benefit your teaching/research by March 10, 2014. Please put 'BAAL/Cambridge University Press Seminar' as the subject line and e-mail to Cassie.SmithChristmas at uhi.ac.uk<mailto:Cassie.SmithChristmas at uhi.ac.uk>
Information on travel and accommodation will be e-mailed to all participants prior to the seminar. There is also the possibility of an optional sightseeing trip on Saturday, May 31st to local sites such as the Callanish Standing Stones and the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village given there is sufficient interest.
