*Tenure Track Assistant Professor Position in TESOL*
The Department of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
(UMBC) seeks to fill a tenure-track assistant professor of TESOL position
beginning fall 2015. The department especially seeks someone with research
interests in one or more of the following areas: language assessment,
second language acquisition, ELL pedagogy, and preK-12 ESL education. The
successful candidate will show clear promise of becoming a recognized
scholar in his or her area(s) of research.
*Responsibilities:* The successful candidate will be expected to:
- teach a range of TESOL courses at the undergraduate, master's, and
doctoral levels in on-campus, online, and off-campus settings;
- participate in TESOL students' portfolio evaluations;
- supervise students' research;
- advise current and prospective students;
- maintain a record of scholarly publications;
- engage in program, department, campus, community, and professional
service; and
- apply for external funding for research or program development.
*Requirements: *Candidates should have a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied
linguistics, or related fields; prior ESL/EFL teaching experience at
preK-12 and/or adult/college levels; and prior ESL/EFL teacher training
experience. In addition, strong consideration will be given to those
applicants that are engaged in school-based research in diverse settings,
and are proficient in one or more languages other than English.
*Location:* UMBC's location between Baltimore and Washington, DC enables it
to draw on the vast economic and cultural resources of both cities. It is
an NCATE-accredited, Carnegie Research University (high research activity)
widely recognized for its excellence in undergraduate and graduate
education.
*Department:* The Department has 21 full-time faculty on tenure-track,
clinical, and lecturer lines and serves over 550 graduate students in the
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) initial certification program, Master of
Arts in Instructional Systems Development program, Master of Arts in TESOL
program, and Master of Arts in Education (MAE) program. In addition,
approximately 250 students are seeking initial teacher certification
through the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education
undergraduate programs. The department also houses TESOL professional
development programs that offer a variety of non-credit learning
opportunities for teachers, and partners with six other departments in
offering the interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Language, Literacy, and
Culture.
*Compensation: *UMBC offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits
package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, and
paid parental leave. The University also provides mentoring and support for
research.
