Subject: survey on English medium Instruction in European universities
Here is the survey announcement with explanation for mailing lists etc. I wish you a really beautiful Tuesday morning.
Dear colleagues,
Teaching subjects through the medium of English is widely considered to be an essential tool in the internationalization policies of universities. English Mediated Instruction (EMI) can make study programmes more accessible to international students, improve the foreign language skills of local students and also enhance the international prestige of a university and its staff. However, the introduction of EMI raises a series of questions and challenges, including the professional development of teaching staff and the accreditation of lecturers to teach their subjects through English.
With this in mind, the University of León, the Compostela Group of Universities, the Santander Group of Universities and the Languages for Intercultural Communication and Mobility (LICOM) Expert Community of the European Association for International Education (EAIE) kindly ask you to forward this survey: http://goo.gl/FuFgDF to someone responsible for these issues in your University. Only one response per institution is necessary. For the moment, we only require respondents from European countries with the exception of the UK and Ireland.
The survey is available in English and Spanish and should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. It has two aims:
1) to gain an overview of how European university teachers are being trained in order to teach in English
2) to establish what requirements and standards teachers are required to meet in order to engage in EMI
Based on the findings of this survey, the coordinators will develop and publish a report on EMI training and accreditation trends in European universities. This report will be shared with all the participating institutions.
The collaborating organisations may also explore the possibility of offering focused training courses in EMI for their members based on the findings of the survey.
The information provided by individual universities to this survey will be treated confidentially at all times and no individual university will be named in the final report without previous permission being given.
The survey will close 15 October 2014.
Best wishes and thanks,
