POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT



Working Title: Assistant Professor of Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Anticipated Start Date: August 2016 (Fall 2016 Semester)
The Position: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Professor in the area of TESOL. The Department seeks applicants who have experience in developing and implementing language and multicultural education programs and teaching language minority education curriculum at the College/University level.  Applicants should possess theoretical and practical interests in and knowledge of the teaching and learning of English as a new language and have the capacity to work with teachers and other professionals in multi-disciplinary settings.  The anticipated starting date is August 1, 2016.
Duties and Responsibilities: The individual selected to fill this position will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:  (1) teach graduate and undergraduate level courses on the Fayetteville campus and online courses; (2) participate in student advisement and mentoring, including service on graduate student advisory and dissertation committees; (3) develop and/or facilitate off campus programs at both childhood and secondary education levels at multiple sites; (4) conduct research projects both individually and in collaboration with other faculty; (5) publish the results of scholarship in refereed journals; (6) obtain external funding to support research and curriculum development endeavors; (7) provide professional development for P-12 schools; (8) collaborate with P-12 schools; and (9) provide service to the departments, college university,  community, and profession.
Minimum Qualifications:

1.      An earned doctorate by May 2016 from a nationally recognized university in educational linguistics, applied linguistics, English as a Second Language or a closely related field:

2.      Research interest in culturally responsible pedagogy;

3.      Evidence of teaching in the areas of teacher education for culturally and linguistically diverse students;

4.      Evidence of scholarly productivity;

5.      Two years teaching in a US P-12 school setting.


Preferred Qualifications:

Documented evidence of:

·         successful curriculum development and professional development with P-12 teachers;

·         successful teaching at the college/university level;

·         ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment;

·         experience in the development and implementation of online education courses offered by a college/university;

·         experience working in linguistic and culturally diverse settings such as study and/or teaching abroad.

·         collaboration with elementary and secondary US educators;

·         scholarly presentations and/or publications in the areas of education, ESL/bilingual/multicultural education, or related disciplinary areas;

·         minimal proficiency in world language other than English.


Appointment and Salary: This is a 9-month, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank.  The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and background.  Additional summer teaching appointments are possible, but contingent on available funding and demand.
