Bilingualism, Multilingualism and the New Speaker

The 11th International Symposium on Bilingualism will take place at the University of Limerick, Ireland, 11-15 June 2017.



The theme for ISB11 is ‘Bilingualism, Multilingualism and the New Speaker’, an emerging research paradigm that considers all aspects of the linguistic and sociolinguistic competences and practices of bilingual and multilingual speakers who cross existing social and linguistic boundaries, adopting or adapting themselves to new and overlapping linguistic spaces.



ISB11 invites papers in all areas of research in bilingualism and multilingualism, whether or not linked directly to the overarching conference theme, including, but not limited to, linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, clinical linguistics, education, multilingual societies.



ISB11 will also integrate the final meeting of the EU funded COST Action on ‘New Speakers in a Multilingual Europe’.



PROPOSALS

The three categories of proposals are: (1) individual papers, (2) posters, (3) colloquia.

Abstracts should be in English but presentations may be in any language, which should be noted in the submission. The main working language of ISB11 will be English and no interpretation will be provided other than to and from Irish Sign Language.

•Individual papers: Papers are formal presentations on original research by one or more authors, lasting a total of 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion). Please note that the time limit will be strictly adhered to. Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words in length.
•Posters: Poster sessions are for displaying research that offers the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of the research. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork and results of empirical research if data can be presented visually (e.g. charts, graphs, tables). A block of time will be designated when presenters are available to discuss their posters. Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words in length.
•Colloquia: Colloquia allow for extended discussion on a particular topic with a cluster of several independent papers and a joint discussion. Colloquia are presented in a time block of 2 or 4 hours and the colloquium organizer(s) will decide upon the allocation of this time between the introduction, individual papers and the discussion. Colloquia must include an abstract for the panel and for the constituent presentations. Abstracts for collquia should be a maximum of 500 words in length.



SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

Submission of proposals for papers, posters, and colloquia is open and will close on 31 October 2016.  Proposals must be submitted via Conftool, the online author submission management system.



EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

Proposals for individual papers, posters, and colloquia will be evaluated by the ISB11 scientific committee and the organizing committee in terms of quality of content, significance, originality, thematic relevance, and presentation.



ISB11 CONFERENCE PRESENTATION POLICIES

Individuals may submit a maximum of one abstract as first author, whether a paper, a poster, or as part of a colloquium. In addition, an individual may have a role as a colloquium organizer, discussant, or co-author/co-presenter of another paper or poster.



It is assumed that all proposals represent original and unpublished work that is not yet available to the research community.
•The presenter must be a registered attending participant at the Symposium
•The conference policy is that the author will present the paper on the day and time assigned by the conference program committee
