Two Postdoctoral Research Scientists – Language Development
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) is offering two Postdoctoral Research Scientist positions in the new Language Development Department
The MPI for Psycholinguistics is a leading research institute with a stimulating environment and excellent facilities and resources. The research of the Institute is entirely devoted to the question of how we acquire, produce, and understand language. Its investigations are highly multidisciplinary, uniting anthropology, linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and genetics.
The Language Development Department opened in September 2016 and is directed by Prof Caroline Rowland. The Department’s goal is to discover how children acquire their first language. Researchers build, develop and test process models and theories that address the central question of first language acquisition: How do children’s learning mechanisms exploit information in different environments to build mature linguistic knowledge? This work is supplemented by a department-wide Innovations team, whose research focusses on building big data research tools for the automated collection, coding and analysis of child language data.
The successful candidates will be expected to develop, and lead, research projects within one or more of the department’s themes (Language in the brain, Language across the world, Language over development). More information about these themes, and about the facilities available for research, can be downloaded here.
Staff at the MPI have access to state-of-the art research and training facilities (including audio-visual equipment, EEG, fMRI, eye tracking, virtual reality labs) as well as a conference and travel budget.
The positions are available to researchers with a PhD in psychology, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, linguistics or a related discipline. Candidates must have previous postdoctoral experience, good statistical knowledge and good publications. Previous experience of supervising students or junior research staff will be an advantage. We welcome candidates with an interest in any area of first language acquisition and in studying any language, since facilities will be available for testing outside the Netherlands. The language of the Institute is English, so knowledge of Dutch is not required.
Positions are available from 1st May, 2017 but we encourage applications from candidates who will be available to start at any point between May 2017 and December 2017. The term of appointment is between three and five years (dependent on experience, and agreed by negotiation). The salary will be according to the German TVöD salary scale.
Review of applications will continue until the positions are filled. However, please note that the first round of interviews will take place in late March/early April 2017, so applications for the first round should be received by 17th March, 2017.
Informal enquiries should be addressed to Caroline Rowland at caroline.rowland at mpi.nl
Electronic applications should be sent to Nanjo Bogdanowicz at nanjo.bogdanowicz at mpi.nl
Applications should include:
• A 2-page statement of research interests, which should include a short description of the research project(s) you wish to develop at the MPI
• A CV, which should include a list of publications
• Contact details for three referees
• Details of your availability for interview in person or via Skype in the weeks beginning 27th March and 3rd April, 2017.
The Institute is part of the Max Planck Society (Germany), although it is located in the Netherlands. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer.
