Research Assistant, Linguistic and Cultural Diversity

Job Title: Research Assistant, Linguistic and Cultural Diversity
CAL Classification: Research Assistant
Division: Language and Cultural Education (LCE)
Appointment: Regular/Full-time
Position Available: Immediately



SUMMARY:

Research Assistant provides research and development support for projects implemented by CAL’s Linguistic and Cultural Diversity team. Responsible for carrying out project activities as assigned and for contributing to the completion of project tasks and deliverables.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS)

  1.  Manage national recruitment campaign.
     *   Maintain relationships with heritage community organizations, educational institutions, and media outlets.
     *   Organize in-person and online informational events for program staff. Prepare presentation materials, as requested.
     *   Implement national-level advertising campaign; create and place print and online advertisements; create and send HTML email blasts to community organization contacts.
     *   Maintain program website (WordPress) and social media presence.
     *   Respond to applicant inquiries.
  2.  Participate in coordination of telephone interview process, including training interviewers, conducting interviews, coordinating rating process, and rating interviews. Check interview transcripts for quality and accuracy; copy-edit as necessary.
  3.  Work with a team to coordinate applicant language testing.
  4.  Support collection of job placement data.
  5.  Assist with research on program outcomes and language acquisition at high levels of proficiency.
  6.  Contribute to project reports.
  7.  Collaborate with and provide support to other program staff as needed.

B. Language Training Center (LTC)

  1.  Coordinate the rating of entry and exit language proficiency assessments.
  2.  Edit instructional materials for LTC courses as requested.
  3.  Use Blackboard to communicate with participants and project staff regarding assessments, instructional materials, and outcomes.
  4.  Contribute to project reports and proposals, including outcomes analysis and copy-editing.


EDUCATION:

  *   Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) from an accredited college or university, in a related field, with at least four (4) years of relevant experience; or
  *   Master’s degree (MA/MS) from an accredited college or university, in language/linguistics, education, immigrant integration, or a related field, with at least two (2) years of relevant experience.


EXPERIENCE:

  *   Experience with communications/marketing, managing websites and social media, and/or language teaching/assessment.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  *   Proficient in a language other than English.
  *   Strong oral and written communications skills.
  *   Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  *   Strong interpersonal, analytical and writing skills plus ability to work well on a team.
  *   Flexible, organized, attentive to detail, and able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment. CAL adheres to ADA compliance and guidelines as a common practice.
