Language, Race, and Ethnic Diversity Among Asian American and Pacific
Islander English Learners

May was officially designated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)
heritage month in 1992, but that wasn’t the first time the term ‘Asian
American’ entered the American lexicon. Asian American was originally
coined in 1968 in an effort to harness the political power of various
communities with roots in the Asian continent. Over time, this term has
gone through various changes and today, AAPI is commonly used as an
umbrella term for various racial and ethnic identities. The AAPI community
is the fastest growing racial or ethnic group in the U.S.
